CBET & AAMI
Becoming certified as a biomedical equipment technician (CBET) demonstrates to employers a certain level of commitment and proficiency in the BMET discipline. The CBET certification is recognized by the International Certification Commission (ICC) and the United States Certification Commission (USCC). Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, as well as, pass an exam (additional requirements may apply). Exam subject areas include anatomy & physiology, fundamentals of electricity, electronics & solid-state devices, medical equipment function, operation & problem solving, and safety in the healthcare facility.
Careers in Biomedical Technology
Biomedical equipment technicians analyze, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to the operation of biomedical instruments. These devices are found in a variety of industries, including: hospitals, research centers, homes, intensive care units, and clinics. Some devices are even found in airports, railway stations and can be used for industrial applications.
BMETs play a vital role in patient care through the inspection, maintenance and repair of measuring, recording and monitoring devices. These life-saving devices include infusion pumps, patient monitoring systems, cardiac defibrillators, ventilators, and more. BMETs may also train healthcare providers in the proper usage of equipments and provide technical advice on the purchase of new medical instruments. Career titles include biomedical equipment technicians (BMET), medical equipment repairers, and medical device technicians.
